We had the opportunity to sit down with Father Gary Wright from Ss Peter and Paul Jesuit Church, Detroit, Michigan, which was founded in 1848.
Father Wright shared with us the rich history of the Jesuit priests and how they originally were based in northern Michigan helping support our Native American brothers and sisters, then made their way down to Detroit in the early colonial period.
Through the years, Ss. Peter & Paul has been a beacon of spirituality for many of our ethic nationalities from the Italians to Lebanese and many others. Wright talked about the significance the Immaculate Heart of Mary sisters played as part of the education for many of the young children who today are now community leaders. At the same time, the Jesuit priests became an integral part of the education staff at what was the University of Detroit Mercy, which still is active today and the U of D Law School.
Julie M. Berra, the Director of Music and Liturgy played the church’s iconic organ for us, which when it was first installed was the second largest Erban organ in the United States.
We were able to film a special concert of a string quartet for the internationally acclaimed Candlelight Concerts by Fever which hosts concerts illuminated by candlelight and performed by live musicians in some of the most iconic venues in Detroit and around the world. For our production, they played the song “My Girl,” one of Detroit’s all time Motown hits by The Temptations.
We are so thankful to Father Gary Wright and the team at Ss. Peter & Paul along with the team from Fever for allowing the opportunity to film with them.
